Triple award success for USW

26 April 2019

The University of South Wales has won three awards for its work on equality and diversity, cyber education and marketing excellence, all within the space of a week.

USW won the Advancing Staff Equality category at the Guardian University Awards, in recognition of its Fair Play 30 project, for ‘having a profound impact on creating a culture of inclusivity’.

Launched less than a year ago, Fair Play 30 is the equality champions scheme at the University.

The group of 30 staff from across faculties and departments have volunteered to act as advocates for promoting equality and influencing changes, with the aim of encouraging a positive working and studying environment at USW.

The champions proudly wear the Fair Play 30 logo on pin badges, door signs and email signatures, making them visible to any member of staff or student who wants to speak to someone about equality issues.

USW was also named Cyber University of the Year at the National Cyber Awards 2019, which reward those who are committed to cyber innovation, cyber crime reduction and protecting the citizen online.

Andrew Bellamy, Course Leader in Computer Forensics, said of the win: “It was an absolute honour to have won the award for Cyber University of the Year at the inaugural National Cyber Awards.

“It’s great that Cyber at USW is being recognised nationally for the work we do around outreach, innovative teaching and our engagement with industry.

"This award really does validate all the hard work and dedication of our Cyber team.”

Finally, the University was awarded the Best Integrated Campaign title at the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) awards for its Unleash Your Colours campaign, pictured above.

The recruitment campaign was implemented last summer with the aim of increasing enrolments for September entry courses.

It involved sharing USW’s key messages across a range of marketing channels and promotional media, including radio, outdoor, social media and Google search.

The campaign was included in student welcome experiences in the form of a Freshers’ Facebook group to help students make friends, direct mailings, and a Freshers’ Party held at the Treforest Students’ Union.

Dr Steve Lake, Director of Marketing and Student Recruitment, said: “The CIM Marketing Excellence Awards are the gold standard for the industry - not just higher education – and winning shows the expertise of individuals and teams we have working at USW.

“The ‘Unleash Your Colours’ campaign had a real impact on our Clearing performance in 2018 and, as we develop it further, we expect to build on the momentum it has produced in promoting the University.”
